How to Start a Vineyard at Home

Who wouldn't want a private vineyard on their property? Consistency, hard work, and knowledge of the land are crucial, from the overall aesthetic to the glory of the grapevine and the bragging rights to the final product (your very own wine that doesn't exist anywhere else).

Long Island Vine Care works with you to understand what wine you like to drink and what grapes we can grow on your property. But even more importantly, we take every opportunity to educate you about your vineyard and develop a deeper connection with the land: the climate, soil, topography, and why Long Island is an excellent wine-making region.

FAQs

How much space do I need?

The average private vineyard is about 100 vines, which takes up one-tenth of an acre. From 100 vines, you can get 100 bottles of wine.

How do I know I can grow grapevines on my property?

Our on-site assessment will give you assurance. Sometimes, a property isn’t readily able to grow grapevines, but we can take the necessary steps, such as amending the soil, to get it there. As experienced farmers, you can count on us to give you qualified advice and recommendations.

How long does it take a vineyard to grow and produce fruit?

We generally like to plant in April. There’s green growth within the first year, as early as the following May. The first harvest for wine production takes place during the fall of the grapevine’s third year of life.

How much does a vineyard cost to install and maintain?

Pricing for installation and maintenance is assessed based on each individual location and factors such as soil type, planting density, and the proprietor's chosen varieties. Stephen can provide an estimate after a 15-minute phone interview. However, every project is unique and requires a formal on-site consultation to provide a quote.
